4-H Teen Club Meeting Cancelled

The 4-H Community Teen Club meeting and Christmas Pizza Party for tonight Monday, December 13th is cancelled due to the weather.  If you have presents for the Active Day members please drop them off at our office in Highland Heights anytime before Wednesday afternoon.  The Extension office is open 8:00am-4:30pm.  If you would like to go ahead and wrap the present for your person please be sure to write the name of who the gift is for on the gift.  If you have any questions please just give us a call at 859-572-2600!

Buy a Paper Clover!


Stop by the Tractor Supply Company in Alexandria, KY and buy a 4-H paper clover to show your support to Campbell County 4-H!! Now through Sunday, Nov. 14, shoppers at the Alexandria Tractor Supply Company will have the opportunity to support 4-H in Campbell County by purchasing paper clovers for just $1 at checkout!
All funds raised through this local 4-H TSC Paper Clover Campaign will be donated to 4-H, and 60% will be donated directly to Campbell County 4-H to support camps, after-school programs, and other 4-H/youth development program activities in Campbell County.

4-H product survey fundraiser

*** UPDATE***

If you signed up to volunteer for the 4-H product survey fundraiser we’ve had a date mix-up.  The date for the fundraiser is on Tuesday, November 16th from 2:30-6:00pm at the Campbell County Extension office in Highland Heights, KY.  I apologize for any inconvenience this will cause.   Please check your schedules to make sure November 16th will work for you.  If the 16th will not work our please let me know or call our office at 859-572-2600.

If you have not yet signed up to volunteer you still have time to do so and please do!  If you would be interested in taking the product survey please call our office and sign up for a time slot! The 4-H Council will be paid for each person who participates in the product survey.  All participants must be adults 18 years or older.  The product survey includes taste testing food items, and your thoughts on the look or use of various household products.  The product survey will take about 30 minutes to complete.  The money raised will be used to help fund various 4-H programs and projects such as the Communications Speech and Demonstration contests, Fashion Show, Bike Rodeo, 4-H Camp, Scholarships, and much much more.   This is an easy project that requires minimal time and no cost to 4-Hers or to you.

4-H Recognition Night

The Campbell County 4-H Advisory Council held its annual 4-H Recognition Night on October 19th to recognize all of the outstanding youth involved in the club programs and activities over the past year. As part of the recognition program, two overall Outstanding 4-Hers are named each year. This year’s winners were Sadie Boschert and Julia Steffen.

The Outstanding 4-Her Awards include cash awards made possible by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #3205 of Alexandria and the Midwest Gas Company of Highland Heights.

4-H Community Teen Club

We have a very busy October service activity planned!! 
Our October service activity will take place on Thursday, October 28th at 6pm.   We will meet at the Campbell County Extension Office in Highland Heights. 

First we elect club officers.  Club officers will include President, Vice President, and a Secretary/Reporter.  If you are interested in being a club officer please let me know by emailing me at sherri.broderick@uky.edu. 

Once we elect officers we will assemble Takeaways for the Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati.  Takeaways are a small sack breakfast or snack that families staying at the Ronald McDonald house can grab and eat on the go.  By 7pm we will depart for the Ronald McDonald House to drop off the Takeaways and to tour the house.  We will be back to the Extension office no later than 9pm

If you are interested in attending the October meeting and would like to go to the Ronald McDonald House to drop off the Takeaways and tour the house you must register by calling 859-572-2600 by Thursday, October 21st.   We may have limited space so please register as soon as possible.  If you would like to come to the meeting to elect officers and assemble the Takeaways but do not want to go with the group to the Ronald McDonald house please just let us know when you call to register.

Be a part of the Alexandria Fair!

2010 Alexandria Fair Parade –“Volunteers – Making a Difference”
When: Wednesday, September 1
Where: CCMS Parking lot
Time: Be there by 6:15pm
• Parade ends at the fairgrounds. Parents need to make arrangements with their children to pick them up there.
• Wear a 4-H shirt or 4-H colors!
• Parents must accompany children who are under 9 years old.
• There will be a 4-H float but be prepared to walk the parade route unless you have been asked to be on the float.

Other Important Fair Info:
• Check in for exhibits is Wednesday, September 1 from 2-6pm at the fairgrounds exhibit hall.
• Record books & project stories must accompany entries. Books may be typed or handwritten.
• Check the fair pages in this newsletter for the 4-H classes to make sure your entry fits the category before you bring it to the fair.
• If you would like an Alexandria Fair Book the extension office has a supply. 
• 4-H exhibits and record books are to be picked up from the exhibit hall between 2-6pm on Tuesday, September 7.

KY State Fair - 4-H Bike Rodeo

Congratulations to everyone who participate in the Kentucky State Fair 4-H Bicycle Rodeo!  The goal of the Rodeo is to teach 4-Hers the importance of bike safety.  4-Hers from across Kentucky compete in six bike handling skill tests and a written safety exam.  The 4-Hers with the highest overall combined score are declared the champion for their age group.  The winner of the Sr. class is invited to attend the National  Bicycle event!

Community Teen Club Members!

Our August activity will take place on Saturday, August 21st.  We will be volunteering with Nickels for Nico.  Nickels for Nico is a 5K Fun run/walk to raise awareness for the Smith Magenis Syndrome.  The event will take place at the Dayton High School in Dayton, KY.  Nickels for Nico is not only open for teens but anyone can participate!  Please arrive no later than 9:30am as the walk starts at 10am.  The first fifty to show up for the event will receive t-shirts!  Please also note that you do not have to run (I will be walking!!). 

You will need to have your parent or guardian sign the release and waiver on the back of the flyer and bring it with you on the 21st.   If you are interested and plan to attend on August 21st, please call 859-572-2600 and let us know.

Make plans to go to the Kentucky State Fair!


The Kentucky State Fair is just around the corner.  The Kentucky State Fair is a ten day event that includes the World's Championship Horse Show, daily concerts, talent shows, and much more. 
While at the Kentucky State Fair don't forget to stop by Cloverville!  Cloverville is a village that allows 4-H participants from across the state to display their skills and compete for champion honors. Major project categories include: entomology, geology, forestry, electirc, foods, horticulture, woodworking, clothing, knitting and crocheting, home enviroment, consumer science management, technology, country hams and photography.

4-H Community Teen Club

Reminder-
Our first activity will take place on July 21st and teens will be helping the Active Day participants in the garden and host a cook out and mini Fair!
We will be talking about the Fair and what types of events happen at a Fair. I am looking for any 4-Hers who have past Fair experiences, such as showing animals, or entering an exhibit. If you wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with the Active Day group please let me know. If you have any ribbons or pictures please bring those with you! You can also email the pictures to sherri.broderick@uky.edu.
The event will take place at the Campbell County Extension Office at 3500 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights, KY. Teens should arrive at 10am to help set up for the day and should be over by 1:30pm.

Health Rocks!

Health Rocks! day camp was a great success! We had a fun and busy three days of Health Rocks! day camp. Everyone who attended participated in a taste test, physical activity and made healthy snacks each day. On Monday Reser Bicycle of Newport, KY talked to us about bike safety and why we need to wear a helmet when riding our bikes. Kate Vaught talked to us about our BONES and the importance of calcium and we participated in the Milk Challenge. We had Dr. Herald of Herald Family Density located in Southgate, KY stop by on Tuesday to discuss oral hygiene and explain the proper way to brush and floss your teeth. We also talked about how to eat healthy when eating fast food and we picked out the healthy fast food options at fast food restaurants! On our last day Sallie Parker Lotz from NKU talked to us about the health related programs NKU has and the types of jobs you can have in health. Barb Heck explained sun safety and the importance of sun screen. Ronda Rex also stopped by and explained the consequences of smoking and why we shouldn’t smoke. At the end of Health Rocks! each camper had the chance to win some really cool prizes such as reds tickets and bicycles! Overall Health Rocks! day camp was awesome! Everyone had a great time and learned a lot of good information to keep us healthy.

4-H Community Teen Club


Campbell County 4-H is creating a new club just for teens!

The 4-H Community Teen Club will focus mainly on community service activities. The club will meet each month to volunteer as a group for an event or some sort of community service activity. Some of the community service topics we currently have in mind are working with the Ronald McDonald House, volunteering with Active Day, River Sweep, and a Habitat for Humanity trip summer of 2011. Some months we will take a break and just meet as a group for fun events, such as going to a Cincinnati Reds game or snow tubing as a group. 

If you are interested in joining the 4-H Community Teen Club please join us Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 for an Ice Cream Party at the Campbell County Extension Office in Highland Heights from 6-7pm. You can make your own ice cream sundae and learn more about the club and our first community service activity.  If you have any friends who might be interested in the 4-H Community Teen Club but not familiar with 4-H, please invite them to join us! The 4-H Community Teen Club is open to all Campbell County teens 14-18. Teens younger than 14 can join but must have completed the 8th grade.

4-H Fashion Show – A Success!

Thanks to all the parents, sewing leaders, club leaders, and volunteers for your help and support for the fashion show and sewing projects!

All of the sewing construction winning projects, both non-clothing and clothing, will go on to compete at the state fair. More information about when to bring your item back to the 4-H office for the state fair will be in a future 4-H newsletter. All 4-H’ers who made an item should remember to bring it to the Alexandria Fair check in on Wednesday, September 1, from 2-6pm. Be sure to bring your project record form and project story with it! Each item and book will get a ribbon and premium money!

4-H Health Rocks! Summer Day Camp

Time: 7:00 pm

As in the past, 4-H’ers in the show will need to be at the extension office at 4:00 pm for workshops and dress rehearsal so plan now!

The completed sewing articles (both clothing & non-clothing) will be due NO LATER THAN 4:30 pm on Monday, April 19 for construction judging. This judging is also for state fair judging. If you are making a non-clothing item (duffle bag, purse, etc.) you can still be in the fashion show!

Tractor Supply Company - March 26 to April 18


From March 26 to April 18, Tractor Supply Company will partner with 4-H for a Paper Clover Promotion.  60% of each paper clover sold or customer donation will go directly to the county 4-H program in which it was raised.  In Campbell County we have a Tractor Supply Company located at 7910 Alexandria Pike, Alexandria, KY 41001.  Stop by the Tractor Supply Company in Alexandria, KY and buy a 4-H paper clover to make a donation to Campbell County 4-H!!

County Talk Meet Finals

The County Wide Speech Finals will be held on Monday, March 8th with registration starting at 6:30 PM and the competition beginning at 7:00 PM. The Campbell County 4-H Demonstrations Competition will be held on Tuesday, March 9th with demonstrations starting at 6:30 PM. Both events will be held at the Campbell County Cooperative Extension Office in Highland Heights.

Global Gourmet Cooking Series

Reminder-

2010 Outstanding Volunteers for 4-H

The 2010 Outstanding Volunteers for Campbell County 4-H are Gene and Paula Barbian. Gene and Paula have been 4-H volunteers for over 10 years and are active in the Saddle Up 4-H Horse Club. Gene is one of the three main organizational leaders of the club and is also a member/director on the Alexandria Fair board. Paula has worked on numerous committees for 4-H including horse camp. She also serves as secretary at the the 4-H Horse Shows and has chaired the committee for the State 4-H Horse Show Stable display for many years. Both Paula and Gene work with fundraising and the recognition banquet as well as the Kindred Hearts 4-H Club, 4-H Capital Experience, the Country Ham Project, Kentucky State Fair, and the Alexandria Fair. Gene and Paula have been married for 31 years and have two daughters, Julie and Catherine, and a granddaughter, Emma.

4-H Communications Events

It’s that time of year again---time for the Campbell County 4-H Communications Events!

The County Wide Speech Finals will be held on Monday, March 8th with registration starting at 6:30 PM and the competition beginning at 7:00 PM. The Campbell County 4-H Demonstrations Competition will be held on Tuesday, March 9th with demonstrations starting at 6:30 PM. Both events will be held at the Campbell County Cooperative Extension Office in Highland Heights.

If you would like to give a speech and you do not have a school or club speech competition, you must preregister for the County Wide Finals no later than February 24th. To participate in the Demonstrations Competition you must be preregistered by March 2nd. To preregister call the office the Campbell County Cooperative Extension Office and give us your name, age, title of your demonstration and a description of your demonstration. R.C. Durr 4-H Scholarship
The Durr Foundation will award 3 $2500 scholarships to Northern Kentucky 4-Hers! If you are a active 4-Her, a high school senior with at least a 2.5 GPA and plan on attending the University of Kentucky this fall please apply for the R.C. Durr 4-H Scholarship! All applications must be postmarked before March 1st 2010. This scholarship can also be renewed for your sophomore year at UK if a 2.0 GPA is maintained. For more information please contact a 4-H agent or stop by the office and pick up the application.
